Why we work out with kettlebells

It’s not enough just to work out. You have to have a plan when you exercise. If you don’t plan ahead for your daily (and weekly, and monthly) workout routine(s), you’re basically flying blind. It’s as if you are traveling a route that is a complete mystery to you.

Without this fitness plan, you will find that you’re doing the same thing(s) over and over again. But you won’t get any better at them.

Kettlebells, on the other hand, are simple enough so you can get right into things with a minimum of learning curve. You don’t need to spend weeks or months learning all the complicated things that gym-goers (for instance) need to know to use the myriad of machines and gizmos. With kettlebells, you just pick it up and go. And as you get more experienced and more knowledgeable about kettlebell workouts, your fitness levels skyrocket.

A good indication of how adjustable kettlebells can help you is that most beginners quickly outgrow their first kettlebell. They need to buy a new, heavier ‘bell within 2 months or so. But with adjustable bells, the weight ‘grows’ with you. You will have whatever weight you need to get the proper training effect, because you can set it up with whichever level of intensity you desire.

So if you feel like your fitness efforts are reaching the point of diminishing returns, get your hands on an adjustable kettlebell and give it a try. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Adjustable kettlebells truly do it all

Many people try to tell you that it’s impossible to get stronger by working out with kettlebells. Plenty of knowledgeable fitness enthusiasts say that barbells or dumbbells are the only way to go if you are skinny and you want to get more muscular. However, that’s a misconception. In fact, you can add weight and muscle with kettlebells if you know what you’re doing. And I’m going to show you how to do just that.

For bigger muscles and a more powerful physique, you need to perform squats, pushing movements, and pulling moves. It is these three moves that make up all successful workout routines. As you build all three of these areas into your regimen, you can’t help but get stronger if your diet and nutrition is adequate for putting on body mass. The trick that so many inexperienced weight lifters fail to master is to find kettlebell exercises that work all three of these foundational areas. So let that be your main goal; to find kettlebell movements that are just as good (or better) than barbell or dumbbell exercises.

You see, kettelbells are simple. Not only are kettlebells easy to understand, the exercises you perform with them are easy too. But within that simplicity is a real depth of possibilities that gives you the tools you need to accomplish just about any physical goal you set for yourself.

But one other difference between barbells and kettlebells is a bit of a problem. This is the concept of progressive resistance. To put it simply, you need to add weight to the bar progressively if you want to get stronger. That is, each time you work out you should lift a heavier weight.

With barbells, you can easily design a workout program featuring progressive resistance. It’s a simple matter to add weight to a barbell. But kettlebells are a different matter. Until recently, we didn’t have a reliable way to add weight to our kettlebells.

But all that has changed with today’s adjustable kettlebells.

It’s totally easy to set up a modern adjustable kettlebell like the Ironmaster kettlebell. It takes only a moment to set up your workout weight. And adjustable bells make it easy to add weight regularly so your body gets stronger and more powerful. In fact, one adjustable bell replaces 3 (or more) traditional fixed-weight kettlebells. Don’t be discouraged by the fact that they cost a bit more up front. In the long run, it’s less expensive to use adjustable bells than old-fashioned fixed bells.

As soon as you start using adjustable kettlebells, your routine will start to pay dividends becasue you’ll be able to change the weight and intensity as you wish. Don’t let your gains and progress stall because of the drawbacks of cast-iron kettlebells. Adjustable kettlebells are the modern way to enjoy a successful kettelbell workout.

Prepare your kettlebell before use

There are three tasks everyone should do to make their kettelbell training as easy and trouble-free as possible:

Remove paint from the handle

Some guys like to keep the handle of their kettlebel bare of all paint. Removing the paint makes the handle smoother, with less friction during dynamic exercises like the snatch or the jerk.

In fact, people have been known to lightly oil the handle to further reduce friction and lessen the chance of blisters. But this is a double-edged sword, because a handle that’s too slippery will make it hard to grip the already thick handle of your kettlebell.

So if you have a problem with excessive callous or blister formation, you can try stripping the kettlebell handle down to the bare metal. It just might help.

Smooth the casting marks from the handle

Cast iron has a problem: it has casting marks from the mold used during manufacture.

Unfortunately, these marks seem to show up very often on the inside of the kettlebell handle. And this spot is right where your hand needs to grip the ‘bell the tightest. If your kettlebell has casting lines inside the handle, it’s a recipe for hand problems and blisters.

Thankfully, it’s easy to remove these casting lines. Just use a half-round file to smooth a kettlebell handle. The flat part of the file works well for the high-radius parts of the handle, and the rounded part works on the curves.

Remove rust

Finally, make sure your kettlebell doesn’t accumulate a coating of rust. Keep it painted so rust doesn’t have a chance to form.

And if rust does form because you have dings or scratches in the paint, make sure you touch up those areas.

Always claen perspiration off the handle after use.

This way, you can put your kettlebell down on your indoor carpets without getting rust stains over everything.

Kettlebells for the rest of us – beat the expense

Discount kettlebells do not exist at the present time.Lots of people are intrigued by kettlebell training as soon as they’re introduced to it. After all, who doesn’t like simplicity, right? There are few workout regimens that are simpler than kettlebell training. Basically, the barrier to entry is very, very low. At least in terms of the knowledge needed.

But the problem is, kettlebells are surprisingly expensive. These days, you’d be hard pressed to find discount kettlebells because they’re still on the upswing in terms of market penetration.

Experts predict that in around 5 years, kettlebell prices will have leveled out because supply and demand will have equalized and market forces (competition) will dictate the price of ‘bells. Right now, prices are basically set by marketers and consumers have very little say in the matter. In a half-decade or so, consumers will be in a much stronger position to demand decently-priced kettlebells from the manufacturers and suppliers.

So just because you want to start working out with kettlebells doesn’t mean it’s a snap to get started. You need to be able to justify the expense. But if price is no object, then kettlebell training is definitely something you should try, because it’s a fantastic way to increase your fitness levels.

The best adjustable kettlebells for building muscle mass

Lots of folks claim you can’t get bigger muscles by working out with a kettlebell. There are many good weight lifters who say that skinny guys won’t get more muscular unless they use dumbbells or barbells in their resistance training. But that’s not really accurate. In fact, you can add weight and muscle with kettlebells if you know what you’re doing. And I’m going to show you how to do just that.

Guess what: there are no strength training tools simpler than kettlebells. Kettlebells are simple in form and function, and so are kettlebell exercises that you do to get better physically. But just because they’re simple doesn’t mean they’re not ultra-effective. With a kettlebell routine, you’ll be able to reach any goal you set for yourself.

Three moves make up all good strength training programs: squats (legs), pushing moves, and pulling moves. Without these three aspects of a strength training program, you won’t be able to add very much muscle mass and you’ll remain at your present level of power and strength. With all three of these bases covered, it’s a simple matter to get stronger as long as your nutrition is acceptable and you’re gaining weight. But many guys who don’t have much time in the gym don’t know how to use kettlebell exercises to work these three areas. That should be the main sticking point of any kettlebell routine: to find moves that replace and/or complement barbell exercises traditionally used to gain weight.

Another problem exists, and kettlebell users often run into this. The theory of progressive resistance is what I’m referring to. Simply put, progressive resistance is the idea that you need to add weight to the bar each time you lift if you want to get stronger.

Barbells are designed to make it easy for us to add progressive resistance into our lifting programs. Putting more weight plates on the barbell is very easy. Kettlebells, on the other hand, are not as easy to add weight to. There really was no reliable way to add weight to a kettlebell workout until recently.

But with modern adjustable kettlebells, all that has changed.

It’s child’s play to use a modern adjustable kettlebell. You can easily dial in your working weight, and it’s simple to add weight on a regular basis as your body gets stronger and more capable. In fact, one adjustable bell replaces 3 (or more) traditional fixed-weight kettlebells. Don’t be discouraged by the fact that they cost a bit more up front. In the long run, it’s less expensive to use adjustable bells than old-fashioned fixed bells. The list of the best adjustable bells includes the Ironmaster adjustable kettlebell for guys who really work out seriously, and the Stamina kettle versa bell for folks that plan to use less weight but still get a great kettlebell workout.

Once you get your hands on a kettlebell that makes it as easy to change weight and workout intensity as barbells or dumbbells do, your exercise routine will get you the results you are after. Don’t let your gains and progress stall because of the drawbacks of cast-iron kettlebells. So don’t waste time with fixed-weight bells. Get an adjustable kettlebell because it’s the state of the art as far as kettlebell workouts is concerned.

When are kettlebell prices going to come down?

It’s one of the most common complaints about kettlebells — that kettlebell prices are crazy expensive — and most kettlebell enthusiasts know this is the reason kettlebells are not more popular.

Market forces drive prices

Kettlebells are still somewhat new. And that’s why they cost so much. It’s the companies that are early into any given market that can charge a premium for items that later become much more common — and much less expensive.

So it’s almost a certain that kettlebell prices will fall in the future.

But how far will they fall? Read on.

Indicators

Most kettlebells are pretty simple to manufacture. Simpler than dumbbells even. So it’s not the manufacturing process in and of itself that is keeping the costs up.

And shipping costs are high because of the continuing high cost of oil. But they shouldn’t be very much higher (if at all) than dumbbells. So that’s not the reason either.

Basically, we expect prices to fall a bit when more manufacturers and distributers get into this market.

Final word

Finally, the most important factor that will bring prices down to reasonable levels is market saturation. When there are finally so many kettlebells in circulation that people start to sell them second-hand, prices will inevitably fall.

Right now, it’s still hard to get your hands on a ‘bell in some areas. But when more and more folks have them, prices will naturally fall.

So what’s your guess? How long will it be until reason prevails? When do you expect kettlebell prices to fall?

Types of Kettlebells

Lots of people are learning that kettlebells offer performance and ease of use that is unrivaled among other sorts of exercise and strength training equipment.

But it can be confusing because although kettlebells seem like a simple item, there are lots of different sorts of ‘bells available.

We all want to get the most bang for our buck and make sure to get the things that really suit us.  So with that in mind, here is a quick guide to the sorts of kettlebells that are available and which of them will probably suit you best.

Wide handles or regular stubby handles

The handle of your kettlebell has a lot to do with how you can use it.  Some older, traditional ‘bells had thick, stubby handles.  These are good for normal kettlebell workouts that feature a lot of overhead moves like snatches, jerks, presses, and the like.

Thick handle kettlebells ‘fit’ in the crook of your hand very comfortably, and they don’t really move around much as you put them overhead.

But wide-handle bells are becoming very popular because people find them more versatile than the stubby, thick ones.

With a wide handle, you can easily do two-handed moves like swings.  And, it becomes a bit easier to let the ‘bell swing around your arm during moves like windmills or turkish getups.

So unless you’re lifting really heavy overhead, a wide handle kettlebell is probably the best choice for you.

Adjustable kettlebell or fixed-weight?

The number one innovation to come along in recent times (at least as far as kettlebell folks are concerned) are adjustable kettlebells.  These combine the best features of good strength training equipment like adjustable barbells or dumbbells, with the unique training benefits of good old kettlebells.

In other words, the best feature is that they are adjustable in weight and they let you choose the proper training weight for whatever exercise you’re planning to do.  This means you won’t have to do heavy swings with a light ‘bell, or light jerks with a wrist-breaking heavy kettlebell.  You’ll always be just right.

Iron or steel?

The newest trend is towards steel kettlebells.  They’re precision-machined to be just the right weight, and they have a better fit and finish than traditional cast iron bells.

But unless you plan to compete in a sanctioned kettlebell competition, it’s really not necessary to spring for the extra expense of a steel kettlebell.

Get yourself either an adjustable ‘bell, or a cast iron bell that’s coated with vinyl to prevent rust.  Either way, you’ll be happy with your new aquisition.

The Big 2 — Kettlebell Snatches and Swings

There are two moves that have become favorites of kettlebell athletes everywhere.  Snatches and swings are effective enough to deliver great results with a minimum of preparation and practice.  But they’re also simple enough that you can pick up th essentials without spending weeks learning how to move.

Kettlebell snatches

The snatch is deceptively simple.  Basically, you swing (or snatch) the ‘bell from down near the floor to a position directly overhead.  This move develops power and explosiveness, and it’s a staple exercise among most athletes.

Places on the web like eHow talk about the snatch as being the best kettlebell exercise.  I’m not sure that’s a provable point — after all, most people have their own strongly-held opinions — but it’s certainly not going to raise any red flags among kettlebell trainers.   They all agree that kettlebell snatches are indispensible.

On Youtube, the snatch is described as being “difficult to master”.  But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be snatching as soon as is practical.  Just because you’re not a master doesn’t mean you can’t learn and benefit from this great exercise.  Here’s a YouTube video that explains things further:

The thing is: just do it.  Don’t worry if it’s hyped up to be a move for ‘masters’.

Kettlebell Swings

The kettlebell swing is often thought of as a prerequisite for the more ‘advanced’ moves like the snatch.  But basically, it’s a prerequisite for just about every kettlebell exercise you will go on to learn and master during your kettlebell lifting career.

Kettlebell swings are the basic, fundamental foundation that you’ll build on when you learn and perfect the other movements.

No ‘bell workout is complete without some kettlebell swing repetitions — if only for a warm-up.

Kettlebell Swing

So learn the swing, use it to get in shape and prepare you for the more rigorous exercises to follow, and above all, enjoy it!

Hoist ‘em High — Kettlebells for Fitness

KettlebellIf you’re in the market for a workout that combines the best of both worlds — strength and conditioning — and is based on good old-fashioned hard work combined with a bit of new-fangled exercise theory, why not give kettlebell training a try?

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about kettlebells:

The kettlebell … is a cast iron weight (resembling a cannonball with a handle) used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training.

But what does that really mean?  Read on and I’ll explain…

Ballistic exercises are those that you do with power and speed, as opposed to exercises that train pure muscular strength.  Ballistic movements put stress not only on the muscle fibers, but on tendons and ligaments too.  They’re used for speed and power development, and the main goal of ballistic training is to develop overall athleticism rather than brute strength.

Although it’s a bit of a stretch to claim that kettlebells develop ‘cardiovascular’ capacity, many guys (and gals) who work out with kettlebells use high rep exercise schemes that promote cardio conditioning.  It’s this sort of versatility that makes kettlebell training everything to every man.

Strength training is an obvious benefit of kettlebell work.  After all, kettlebells are weights and, for the most part, what we do with them is simple resistance training.

Flexibility, however, is a bit harder to understand in the context of kettlebells.  But when you examine most of the popular kettlebell movements — like swings, for instance — you’ll notice that it takes you through a full range of motion that can’t help but develop and maintain good functional flexibility.

So don’t be afraid to add some kettlebell moves into your next fitness workout.  If you’re like many of the folks who have done just that, you’ll probably find that kettlebells are just what the doctor ordered for anyone who needs to spice up their fitness workouts and cover all the bases when it comes to strength, flexibility, and cardio conditioning training.
